Merry-Go-Round is inspired by a theory put forward by the psychologist Robert Plutchik He created a classification approach for emotional responses and identified eight primary emotions and arranged them in a wheel – anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust and joy. I find this way of approaching emotions quite interesting – the idea that they can be defined and thought of in this controllable simplified way. It contrasts sharply with the actual experience of being an emotional being.
The last few years have been defined by my experience of the menopause and hormonal highs and lows have meant that I have experienced emotion in a different way. Before the menopause I did not have extreme swings of emotion but now I find myself on a daily merry-go-round of feelings that I am not used to.
I was inspired by this beautiful traditional fairground merry-go-round located at a destination garden centre near where I live.
