This piece is called Peace Village. It shows a fantastical village that is crowned with a Pax flag (‘pax’ means peace in Latin). The houses are based on illustrations in the Hereford Mappa Mundi. The map artist would not have seen the buildings they were illustrating but created visions of places that were sometimes only known in legend. My peace houses represent what refugees are looking for – home and peace – often destined to remain just a fantasy. Images blend into one another and reflect each other to represent how nebulous these thoughts must be – a feeling or longing for home and safety.
